Frequently Asked Questions

What is occupational health?

Occupational health is a field of healthcare that focuses on the physical, mental, and social well-being of workers. Its main goal is to prevent work-related illnesses and injuries, promote health, and support employees in remaining fit for their jobs.

Why is occupational health important?

- Reduces workplace injuries and illnesses

- Improves productivity and job satisfaction

- Ensures legal compliance with health and safety regulations

- Supports employee well-being and retention

What does an occupational health assessment involve?

An occupational health assessment is not the same as a regular medical check-up. It usually includes:

- Reviewing health conditions that may affect work

- Checking if work activities may worsen existing health problems

- Recommending adjustments (e.g., flexible hours, ergonomic equipment)

- Supporting safe return-to-work after illness or injury

Do I need to share my full medical history?

No. You only need to share health information relevant to your work. Occupational health professionals keep information confidential and only share recommendations with your employer (e.g., 'employee may need adjusted duties'), not detailed diagnoses.

Can occupational health declare me unfit for work?

Occupational health does not 'hire or fire.' They provide advice and recommendations. Employers use this advice to make decisions about adjustments, redeployment, or in some cases, fitness for certain safety-critical roles.

What common services are provided by occupational health?

- Health surveillance (e.g., hearing, lung function tests, skin checks)

- Pre-employment or fitness-for-work assessments

- Vaccinations (e.g., flu, hepatitis B)

- Stress management and mental health support

- Return-to-work planning

- Ergonomic and workplace risk assessments

What is health surveillance and when is it needed?

Health surveillance is ongoing health monitoring for workers exposed to risks such as noise, vibration, dust, or chemicals. It is legally required if risks cannot be fully controlled and exposure could harm health.

Are occupational health records confidential?

Yes. Records are confidential medical files held by occupational health professionals. Employers only receive relevant recommendations about adjustments or restrictions, not personal medical details.

How can occupational health help with mental health issues at work?

- Advising on reasonable adjustments (e.g., flexible hours, reduced workload)

- Recommending access to counselling or Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)

- Supporting return-to-work after stress, anxiety, or depression

- Promoting workplace wellbeing initiatives

What should I expect from a return-to-work assessment?

The occupational health practitioner will:

- Review your medical situation

- Assess whether you’re ready to return safely

- Recommend phased return, lighter duties, or adjustments if needed

- Communicate only necessary recommendations to your employer
